Manor Foundation Policies: ICT Code of Conduct ¦ Internet Safety Code

Here at Manor Foundation we believe the use of ICT, in all forms, is a part of day to day life, and as such encourage the safe use of the technology.

Everyone is taking to the new technologies in its varying forms. ICT is available not only with computers, but also mobile phones, game consoles, handheld devices and digital TV, and the technologies are always developing and moving forward. The internet is growing daily and indeed hourly and every minute.

We need to ensure that the technologies are being used in a safe manner, not only in school but in daily life. We educate the pupils in the dangers of the internet as well as the many benefits it brings.

One of the most popular uses of the internet is social networking where people live in a virtual world and can meet and talk in virtual worlds. Such sites as myspace, bebo, friends reunited are such examples. These sites encourage users to share experiences, hobbies and ideas and are good discussion forums. However there are dangers with the sites as some people may feel "safe" and believe they know the site and its members. We must remember these are "virtual" worlds and people on the sites can hide their identities behind a computer.

It is important to keep personal details safe. Remember the information can be viewed by anyone!

The Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) can provide valuable information for teachers, parents, and children on using the internet safely. Their website can be accessed from www.ceop.gov.uk.

CEOP also have a www.thinkuknow.co.uk website which also provides very useful information as well as an online test to check your knowledge of safe use of the internet. They also conduct surveys on this site to help gather information.

Both CEOP sites give helpful advice not only on safe use but also what to do if you or someone you know is vulnerable and what signs to look out for. We recommend you take some time to look at these sites.

Another danger on the internet is that because it is so widely available, rumours can be spread and not everything on the internet is fact. Always research a number of reliable resources to ensure you get the full unbiased picture.

Things that are posted on the internet are traceable and remain there forever. Increasingly employers and academic institutions are checking the internet for candidates history. Be careful what you post on the internet as it may come back to haunt you later.
