Art & Design

In Year 7 pupils are introduced to a wide range of experiences, some of which will be very new, some will have been experienced at Key Stage 2. Individual teaching staff are responsible for differentiation and progression within each project. Pupils are continually given the opportunity to reflect on what they have done before and wherever possible to demonstrate what they already know.

In Year 8 there is a greater emphasis upon the understanding and application of a range of techniques together with a growing concern for the presentation of work; reinforcing the work undertaken in year 7.

By year 9, pupils should have gained the confidence to perceive their ideas through a variety of processes and media. Pupils will be expected to draw upon the knowledge gained in Year 7 and 8 to develop their own ideas and to work independently.

WHAT PUPILS LEARN ...

In art and design, pupils develop skills in order to be able to:

  • explore and develop ideas;
  • investigate and make art, craft and design;
  • evaluate and develop work.

They acquire and apply knowledge and understanding of:

  • the visual and tactile qualities of materials and processes and how these can be manipulated and matched to ideas, purposes and audiences;
  • codes and conventions and how these are used to represent ideas, beliefs and values in works of art, craft and design;
  • continuity and change in the purposes and audiences of artists, craftspeople, and designers from Western Europe and the wider world.
